Understanding pH Down There
You have probably heard phrases like “pH-balanced,” “restore your pH,” or “your pH is off.”But what does that actually mean? Vaginal pH refers to how acidic or alkaline the environment inside the vagina is. It is different from the external vulva which is the skin you can see and touch, and the two should not be treated as though they are the same thing. The goal is not to constantly test, clean, or “fix” your pH. Your vagina has its own self-regulating environment, while external intimate skin needs gentle, straightforward care.
What Vaginal pH Actually Means
A typical vaginal pH is slightly acidic. That acidity helps support the normal bacteria that live inside the vagina. Your vaginal pH can naturally shift with hormones, menstruation, sex, pregnancy, certain medications, and menopause.
A change in pH by itself is not something you can necessarily feel. What you may notice instead are symptoms such as a strong or unusual odor, changes in discharge, itching, burning, or discomfort, and those symptoms can have many different causes.
What Can Affect Vaginal pH?
-
Hormonal Changes
Estrogen helps support the vaginal environment. During perimenopause and menopause, declining estrogen can make the vaginal lining thinner and drier and can also raise vaginal pH.
-
Menstruation
Blood is less acidic than the usual vaginal environment, so vaginal pH can temporarily change around your period.
-
Sex
Semen has a higher pH than the vagina, so vaginal pH may temporarily shift after intercourse.
-
Antibotics
Antibiotics can affect the normal bacteria that help maintain the vaginal environment.
-
Infections
Some vaginal infections can change vaginal pH and may also cause symptoms such as unusual odor, discharge, itching, or burning.
-
Douching & Vaginal Products
Douching and fragranced vaginal products can disrupt the vagina's normal environment rather than improve it. The vagina does not need internal cleansing.
Changes After 40
Perimenopause and menopause deserve their own conversation here.
As estrogen levels decline, the vaginal lining may become thinner, drier, and less elastic. The amount of vaginal discharge can also decrease, and vaginal pH may become less acidic than it was earlier in life.
That means changes in dryness, sensitivity, burning, itching, or comfort after 40 are not necessarily a sign that you did something wrong or failed to keep yourself “balanced.”
They may simply reflect the hormonal changes happening in this stage of life.
Gentle Ways to Support Intimate Health
You do not need to constantly correct or manipulate vaginal pH.
A few simple habits are usually more helpful:
• Do not douche or cleanse inside the vagina.
• Gently cleanse the external vulva during your regular bath or shower.
• Avoid heavily fragranced sprays, deodorants, and washes around the intimate area.
• Choose breathable underwear when possible.
• Change out of damp workout clothes and swimsuits when you can.
• Pay attention to changes in odor, discharge, itching, burning, or discomfort rather than assuming every symptom is a “pH problem.”
The vagina is self-cleaning. External intimate care should stay external.

What DTS Products Do, and Do Not Do
Our products support everyday care of external intimate skin.
They are not designed to:
• change vaginal pH
• treat bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, or other infections
• correct vaginal discharge
• replace medical evaluation when symptoms are persistent or unusual
We believe clear information is part of good intimate care, and sometimes the most helpful thing we can tell you is when a skincare product is not the answer.
When to Talk to Your Doctor
Talk with a healthcare professional if you notice:
• a strong, fishy, or foul odor
• unusual gray, green, yellow, or persistent discharge
• itching or burning that does not go away
• pain during urination or intimacy
• repeated infections
• bleeding, sores, or visible skin changes
• persistent dryness, burning, or discomfort after menopause
Symptoms like these can have causes that need diagnosis and treatment rather than skincare alone.
Down There Skincare® does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. Our role is to help you care for external intimate skin gently, understand what may be normal, and recognize when it is time to get medical guidance.
